Do I net my brussels??
« on: June 28, 2010, 20:17 »
Hiya,

I planted in 6 very healthy brussel plants last night but just wondering if they need netting? Ive got some calabrese & cauli growing in the greenhouse which I will net when I put them out, do I treat brussels the same?

Ta muchly as ever

Yes, I agree. You could find that your plants get munched to stalks overnight by hungry caterpillars if you don't net them.

You must net and PDQ else either the cabbage whites or the Pigeons will ruin them literally overnight.

I have enviromesh which ought to keep everything of munching ability out, but something has got in  I think laid eggs while I was weeding & my back turned for a few moments, so need to do a caterpillar hunt hopefully tomorrow.....

I did the same as you last year. Put down nine shop bought sprout seedlings and didn't know to cover immediately. Returned the next night to find they'd been devastated by pidgeons. I decided to replace all but a three of them ('cos I had some left over anyway) but I really didn't need to bother. They all came good in the end. I understand that the centre part would need to be completely eaten away for the plant not to come good.

So if yours are 'not too bad' as you say, you've got away with it.
