Wigwam question for sweetpeas and climbing beans
« on: June 07, 2009, 12:18 »
Hi

I have got a 7ft wigwam with my sweet peas and beans growing up.

My question is will they support each other as they grow or will I need to put netting round?

If so how do I do it. I know it may sound a stupid question but its my first time growing beans.

Have you already got strings from the soil level to the top of the pole?
If you have, they will climb up them with no probs :)

Well if they have nothing to cling to ..to climb, they tend just to make a tangle on the floor if there is nothing they can get a grip on.....either string or a few canes tied to top, or netting but dont wrap this tight to the pole as they have to be able to weave in and out.

It's usually done to look like a maypole look here for an idea

Have a look at the Munty bean frame thread for some very different ideas

My wigwams are usually 6 canes tied together at the top and a bean plant at each cane.  sometimes I tie the plant to the cane if its windy until they start to wind themselve up!!

Hi Mumofstig.

I have got canes but not string, so hopefully they will cling to the poles. Thanks for the links.

I never use string for beans, just canes and they always grow up them fine.  Sometimes I have tied them at first util they really start to climb bit only until they are about 12 inches.
