Now I know all you experienced lot will think 'so what' but my sweet peas have started to sprout - about 1 inch tall. I am sure there was nothing there yesterday, this is so cool.
-
you must have green fingers fluff, mine are bigger than yours they have side shoots aswel :)
-
Well typical man, down to measuring, I thought I had done really well.
-
i am complimenting you well done remember to nip the top off when they get bigger
-
ok thank you, I will nip the top off.
-
Nipping the top...hard, is a well known technique for avoiding premature foliation and encourages wider growth and a more luxurient end product. :tongue2: :D
-
OK I will definately nip the top, how can I not when you put it that way.
-
eh? growing them now? from seed? indoors or out?
-
Indoors, in one of those baby propagator things from wilcos - not heated.

Hi Fluffy - have you got a cold frame or mini growhouse? If you have the sweetpeas can go outside once they have germinated. I was advised on another forum not to 'coddle' them and to get them outside as soon as they popped up otherwise they would end up weak and leggy. If you haven't they might be better in the coldest/lightest part of the house. Sweetpeas are one of my favorite flowers, what ones are you growing?

Hi Lottie Lady
I am growing everlasting mixed, just got the seeds in Wilco's cos someone on here said to grow them next to peas.
I got a greenhouse from freecycle and dismantled it last weekend but haven't attempted to put it together again yet. Would it be worthwhile buying one of those little plastic greenhouses for these to grow in - they are about 5 ft high shelf units covered in clear plastic that I think has a zip fastening.
I am just enjoying the experience, I have not gardened for years since my grandad became ill. Now I want to get fit, enjoy the outdoors and grow my own food.

Lucky you getting something from freecycle - everytime I've tried someone has always got there first!
I have mine in a growhouse - it's only a two teir one and it has quite a thick plastic cover and the sweetpeas are doing really well in there, amazingly it stood up to the nasty winds we had last week. I am growing a selection of sweetpeas from Matthewman which I bought at one of the shows last year - I doubt I can grow them as well as him though. I tried peas with some sweetpeas in a pot last year - trouble was I couldn't tell the difference between the flowers <thickysmiley> and I didn't get any peas either!
I am trying some purple podded peas on the lottie for the first time this year and will have to make sure I keep them away from the sweetpeas as they have purple & cream flowers. Don't want to make the same mistake twice :?

I think the growhouse you refer to is what I call a plastic greenhouse, I will have to go and get one, I think I have seen one for around £25.
I have done really well on freecycle, have you actually put out a request for items for an allotment, I did and tongue in cheek asked for a shed and a greenhouse. No shed yet but got a 10 by 6 greenhouse that I had to dismantle, so did the guy a favour by getting rid of it for him and I got what I wanted.
Someone has sent me a load of seeds and I have had hosepipes and tools etc.

On our one the wanted posts go unnoticed I think - I did put a request on for a greenhouse for the lottie - that was last summer - not one response. I think a lot of the stuff on ours goes to car boot sale people as most things get snapped up as soon as they are posted. Maybe one day.... I have got a big plastic green house that I got 2nd hand but, I'm glad to say after the weather last week , hasn't been put up on the lottie yet. That will go up in the spring :D

Have you tried the freeads, in google just type free ads, there were quite a few sheds and greenhouses free or cheap if you dismantled but they were too far away from me, mainly down south, worth a try or put a wanted ad on, they are free.
-
hi
the little shelves with plastic (connot for the life of me think what they are called - plastic green house) are half price in focus at the momment £12.49 , saw some in their today.
hope you can get it a bit cheaper there.
