Planting climbing roses
« on: December 11, 2010, 00:54 »
My climbing roses (bare rooted) have arrived and I will be planting them in over the weekend.

My question: they are to be trained on wires and trellis on a garden wall. how far from the garden wall should I be planting so the stems can be trained to the wall but the plant is not too close to th e dryness of the wall footing?

I'd say 12 - 18" if possible
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I will second that Yorkie, but dig a big as hole as possible and fill it with as much compost/rotted manure as possible. Also if you let the leader grow to say 2mts then bend it back towards the soil, you will get a lot of the buds shoot back upwards so producing a lot more stems/flowers.

The rain shadow effect will be more pronounced if the rose will be facing East (-ish) and obviously less so if facing into the prevailing winds (W or SW.)

That could make a difference if you are a bit pushed for space.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Remember that a wall will suck water from the soil as well.
