Yet again, Kale mystery
« on: July 08, 2012, 19:55 »
I have attempted to grow curly Kale a few times without success. They start off fine and then stay very small putting on no new growth except the leaves withering off here and there. By the winter time they are pathetic and non productive. I even bought some from a garden center last year pre-grown and the same happened. I am using new compost and doing everything correctly but they still end up pathetically small. I have even got some inside the house on the windowsill but they are going the same way.

Italian Kale this year I cannot get going at all. Last year they were fantastic until they were struck by the white maggots rendering them sickly.

Either one way or the other something is bound to stop you  :(

I've found siberian kale easier than curly.

my curly kale is doing really well, the best veg on the plot. All I can think of is that I added lime a week before sowing my seedlings and put some blood fish and bone into the hole they went in.

They could probably do with a high nitrogen feed Hubbali. The rain has washed a lot of nutrients away, and a boost from some liquid manure could go down a treat right now.

Kale should be easy to grow, but like everything else, this year's weather is a big challenge. We lost several kale early on, and finished up with about eight, which will be enough - as long as the white fly don't get there first...

Given them a nitrogen feed and re-potted them on. I did notice one halfway down the stem went very thin and then back to normal. No sign of bite marks or anything.

Even the ones inside the house are going the same way. Edges of leaves going pale, dry and papery thing until withering away.

My curly kale was rubbish too, I was growing some in containers in my garden as down the plot they keep being eaten before even chance to grow!  They was not doing well, then I gave them some tomato feed and they sprung into life and putting lots of new growth on in less than 2 weeks.  The problem now is they are getting whitefly on them, just can't win  >:(
