Title: fewer trusses(more flavor?)
Post by: Brassica Blaz on June 15, 2010, 16:49
hi all,its my first year growing toms in the g/house.most people pinch out at four or five trusses.has anyone pinched out at two or three trusses (perhaps as an experiment)and found they taste better?or is it just a case of more trusses more toms? just an idle thought

More trusses more toms, I think............flavour comes from your soil and feeding, and obviously the variety ;)
Don't over water as you can dilute flavour.
In an ideal world I think animal manures produce better flavour than chemical tomato feed, but that's just my opinion :)

I stop two plants at three trusses and two at four and the rest at five.  It is nothing to do with flavour, it just brings the crop on sooner. I have been picking tomatoes now for two weeks from the plants that have been stopped.

An old hand (and prize winner :) ) told me to stop at three trusses for early ripening. I've never actually tried it, but I might try some like Ivor Backache. (Love the name btw  )
