Two New Girls In Barnsley
« on: November 19, 2011, 18:22 »
We finally got around to getting our first chickens and picked these two up today.

They are Light Sussex and we've called them Sam and Ella.

We have a few more things to put in the run to keep them entertained but we will be free ranging them as much as possible.

According to the breeder they should start laying in two to three weeks.

So far I have taken a lot of advice off here and hope I can start contributing soon.

Thanks for the comments. I think they've settled in well and become gymnasts. I went to clean them out this evening and found they had somehow managed to squeeze through the 3 inch gap between the top of the nest box and the board i was using to try and stop them sleeping in it. I've put them back in the coop but can  see me finding them in the nest box again.

I had the same. I wedged a 6" plank to block off the nestbox and one of them repeatedly managed to squeeze in. A few gentle pushes back onto the perch and she seems to have got the message - so far so good!

Forgot to mention CAL that it is best to hang your feeder and drinker or place them on 2 - 4 bricks.  It saves the hens from kicking dirt in them and generally keeps them cleaner.   ;)

My hen spends most of the day pecking a large mirror I got from the recycle centre.
One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.
