I've got a pile of brassica stalks going back 5 years-how do I get rid of them? They never seem to rot or dry out-and I'm sure they're harbouring the dreaded root fly-do I just bin them and pass the problem on or is there a green solution to getting rid of them?

Well i always get a good fire going and burn them or smash them with a big hammer and chuck them in the compost bin ,,..

I compost mine in the daleks and they rot down just fine.  You can bash them with a lump hammer if you feel so inclined. It is a recommended stress buster and does help the composting process no end    If your composting method is taking five years to rot them down it suggests something is not quite as it should be

I've just sliced them up with the spade in the past.

DD recommended that I bury them in the runner bean trench when I posed the same question a year or so ago!

It works a treat, and of course, keeps the soil aerated with some more compost added!
