Looking after ferns

Looking after ferns

some of my basic garden ferns have over 20+ years, started to look very stumpy at the base.   Can I saw these stumps back hard, or will my ferns die ?  Mrs Bouquet

You can dig them up and divide them now Mrs B.

I believe they like a bit of calcified seaweed to boost their growth.
