McCulloch Lawn Mower help please
« on: August 08, 2012, 23:04 »
I have an old McCulloch lawn mac in pieces in my garage which my sister gave to me a year or so ago. I took it apart with the idea of cleaning it and putting it back together again at my leisure but while I was away working, my eldest ran over the cable on my flymo and it got chewed and other parts have broken on it anyway, so now i need to get the McCulloch up and running. The only trouble being, I've forgotten how it all goes together.

Ive got the front wheels on, the rear drive wheels aswell, the handle with drive and start controls are all in place. The clutch cable has been attached, but I just cant figure out where the cable goes for the engine ????

I thought it was a throttle cable, but it seems not as there is nowhere to fit it to

Can someone explain to me where abouts it fits ????

Thanks in advance

I'm guessing its the engine brake cable that prevents the blade from spinning after the operater presence control lever has been released.
Ive not had the pleasure of working on your model machine but look for small lever and strong spring on the side of the flywheel.

Hi..thanks for the replies

Its a briggs and stratton engine

I found the "brake" and attached the cable....worked a treat.   :D

Believe it or not, I gave engine a quick clean, added fuel and it started after 5 pulls of the cord. It was rather smoky though, so I'm going to read through the help files on briggs and stratton engines in this forum to see if I can find a solution. It did run really smooth though, so apart from the smoke...which was quite a lot...seems a good engine.

It might be that it's been on it's side with oil in the engine. It would smoke for sure then until it burnt off what had accumulated in the exhaust.

As an update.

Changed the oil, and gave it a good clean.

Started it up and it smoked for about 1 minute, then all was good. been running fine ever since.

Before changing the oil, I checked the level a couple of times of the old oil, and there seemed to be a little to much oil in it...maybe causing the smoking. It could also have been that it wasnt stored in the right way also.

Anyway, all fine now

Thanks for your help again
