Medication
« on: September 13, 2009, 11:45 »
Hiya everyone,

As an allotment society we have about 20 allotments with poultry on. One of the members was asking if there was anyway of stocking treatments such as coxoid, respite, poultry spice, poultry shield etc in our shop. This would make it much easier for everyone as there is no specialist shops around us. Obviously we wouldn't need vast quantities but would like to benefit from some sort of 'bulk buying power'.

Just wondered if firstly, anyone knew of any laws which would prevent us;

secondly; does anyone know of any retailers for buying these things?

thanks for your help

Don't know about laws but that's forward thinking!  Well done for the thought!  Just shows you guys/girls really want to take good care of your feathered friends and with thought too!

How many birds do you have roughly?
You might benefit from opening an account with someone like Bowden and Knights and buy in bulk, for example buying in Diatom in 2.5kg or 5kg will save you a fortune compared to an 800gm tube of barrier red mite powder.My last lot of diatom (2.5kg( I think cost me £4.00, excluding P&P. They have a new organic product as well for redmite I think its called Sirrius, which your committee might like to consider instead  Poultry Shield.
Coxoid I doubt you will get much of a discount, its cheap as chips anyway. A wormer such as Flubenvet is much cheaper if you buy the game bird pack, not the premixed one :) This size will last years and works out MUCH cheeper!!!

I remember the flubenvet required a register to be signed. Was that merely for DEFRA tracing or is there a restriction on use ?

I just wondered if they restrict it to single use. ie. not for dishing out to others once purchased. Might be worth an enquiry before buying some.

Thanks a lot for the replies everyone.

Yeh i thought about possible problems with flubenvet etc, good to know about the barrier powder etc though. We'll see what happens, would definitely be much more beneficial by having them on site to hand rather than waiting for mailing etc.

Cheers

It would be a great thing for things like diatom and poultry spice but unfortunately drugs like flubenvet are (meant to be) supplied on an named basis and it is technically illegal to redistribute them unless you are a vet/ official distributer from what I understand.

It is MUCH more economical to buy the large, 2.5% tub than the "Smallholder" version but to buy it and share it out would not be permitted (but not sure how that would be traced. :happy:).
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
