A Prayer for Pauline.
« on: June 20, 2008, 17:46 »
Pauline (one of the cow shed girls) made it home last night, i found her on the doorstep at midnight, casper my dog was whining at the door, i thought he wanted to go out for a wee but when i opened the door he just stood there and kept up the most awful whine, so i went out to see and there she was, crashed out on the porch doorstep, she has the most appaling injuries, huge bite marks and a hole in her back you could drop a golf ball in, we took her to the vet this morning and he was astounded she was still alive (she must have been like this since wednesday) he gave us a choice, try and save her or he could put her to sleep there and then, she must have wanted to live because she came home, so we opted for saving her, he gave her a course of antibiotics to take and a can of blue spray (blue is so not her colour) and wished her well, he said if she keeps on eating and drinking she has a 50% chance of survival, the wounds are infected and pip and i have spent the last hour picking maggots out of them with a pair of tweezers, it's gross, i'm stunned she came back to the house and not the cow shed, if it hadn't been for casper she would have been there all night, i've told her she can't die, she owes me 37 quid for the vet bill, that's a lot of eggs Pauline.

I am so glad that at least one of your girls made it home, even in such a terrible state. How lovely that even after such a short period of time she thinks of you as home and safety. I wouldn't worry too much about the maggots, they are still used regularly in surgery to clean up nasty, infected wounds. As long as they are not heading into her.

Big hugs and I hope she pulls through.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Wow

I'm not going to kiss casper.
She is obviously a fighter. I reckon there's a hollywood blockbuster in this story. They've made them about lesser characters let's face it !

Hope she pulls through and if she doesn't lay, we'll have a whipround ! (maybe  )

Well done for giving her a chance.

Rob  :)

Right, here's tips from the "expert" ;)

Even though I had no maggots, thankfully

Get yourself peroxide out of the chemist (3% ideally) and dribble it onto your wound, it will not only put up the maggots and dirt but desinfect the very best. If you have a friendly large animal vet in the area get a ml of Coopers spot on or dysect (both cattle/ sheep) dilute and put it into the wound (no idea how safe it is in hens, but in this case your either kill or cure).

Pity you're nowhere near me, I'm an expert now in patchin g up :(

Bell

PS: I'll PM you the rest, don't know if I'm allowed to post adivce online
