Sweetcorn
« on: April 27, 2011, 19:16 »
My sweetcorn has spectacually failed - I'm blaming mice, as it makes me feel better...anyway, is it too late to re-sow in pots?

I haven't sown mine yet  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

failed sweetcorns should be noted and investigated properly. because we feel that it is the easiest one to germinate and grow (given good conditions)
so what did you do wrong
sowed outside? cold frame? too much watering? any clues ?  :)
finally we can close the case by blaming the mice  :)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

chitted seed in a plastic tub, planted in loo rolls, tranfered to parafin heated potting shed. pretty much same as always...but mice did eat my peas last year when they were in the shed but damage was more obviosly mice as half the tubes were eaten this time it's a bit more of a mystery.

think I'll go back to wilkos for some more cheap seeds and some mouse traps

can you keep them indoors on a windowledge until they're a couple of inches high? They should then be safe outside for growing on?

You could try soaking the seeds in parafin. I've heard it works on pea seeds to deter mice eating then. I only planted my first batch the other day and the second batch of seeds will go in a few weeks. Nether will be planted outside for over a month so plenty of time.

you won't be gloating if we get a late frost  Keep your eye on the forecasts!

Mine are the same height, but basking in the greenhouse...............it's still too cold to be outside at night here.

never heard of this - maybe worth a try though - is greenhouse heater parafin ok? and how long would I soak?

do you think it would be mice who have nibbled the edges of my pea shoots/plants? as don't have a big slug prob

Or google pea seed paraffin

Not tried it myself but I would say overnight to 24hrs.

after prophesing about sweetcorn the return back to home showed me the reality. half of sweetcorn failed (chitted, indoors) dont know why.
cant blame mice but will certainly blame the compost.  :)
