celeriac 2nd chance
« on: March 15, 2010, 22:43 »
Hi there
I planted some celeriac last year, bought pre-started from a local shop. I stuck it in the ground sometime about May(?) and then it got left to its own devices as we moved and I didn't get a chance to get to the allotment much.

It did precisely nothing, and is still even now exactly the same size as it was when I planted it in.

Question is - is it worth leaving it there and giving it another chance to do its thing or is it pointless and I might as well put something else in the ground?  I thought it was going to be an easy low maintenance veg to grow, but did I do something wrong - or not do something I should have?

Cheers
Sven

Mine was the same....I had amazing leaf and no root to talk of so I've ripped them out.
It could've been too much nitrogen or not enough water over the summer....either way...I'm giving them a miss this year. :(

The ones in the ground will only go to seed if you leave them so pull them out.

Celariac, like celary. needs water and more water to keep it going. If they do not grow very big they are all fine roots and of little use in the kitchen.

Celeriac first chance for me this year!!

Never had it, never grown it, and not a big fan of celery, so we'll see!!

Prob only <10 though, I recall seeing that it needs plenty of water too...in this country, shouldn't be a problem!!

I'm the same, first time of growing it (actually I wasn't going to grow it, but my boss asked me if I could do it for him).  I've started it off in two trays, so I'll see how they go.  You just never know.

I'm going to have another go (Year 3), keep them well weeded, as slugs will decimate them given half a chance.  If you don't think the root is forming as expected, you can still use the leaves as a celery flavouring, so not all is lost.
