Arrrgh! Tomatoes going brown!
« on: July 27, 2010, 10:16 »
Hi guys, some of my tomatoes are going brown at the bottom and i have read thats its a type of rotting process and can be due to the lack of calcium, too much water or fertiliser.

Do i just need to get rid of the ones with the brown stuff on? If so how do you pick them off properly?

On another note, i have also found that the roots are coming out of the bottom of my pots, i guess that means i really need to repot them a.s.a.p like i did with my chillis the other day, is it ok to do this with tomato plants?

When the gf gets home i will be bale to take some photos to show you the browining.

Thanks

It's called blossom end rot............and is to do with calcium uptake, but the problem is caused because at some point there was not enough water for the plants: not enough water equals not enough calcium :(
Just pinch through the stalks to remove them the same as you would to pick them.
Can you find some dishes/saucers/old bowls that can go under your pots to hold a bit more water?
Unless you have been growing them in tiny pots it's not really necessary to repot them. Just feed with tomato feed, as the bottle tells you, and make sure they always have enough water and they will be fine :)

D'oh.  I took it to mean "bottom" of the plant - the stem  ::)

Silly me

I think the brown marks on the tomatoes are known as bottom end rot and as you say, caused by irregular watering and mineral deficiency. Just take off the affected fruit, it's not a contagious disease. The roots comming out of the bottom of the pots are tap roots looking for water so stand the pots in shallow trays with water in. I use deeper containers filled with stones and the pots sit on the stones. The tap roots go down into the stones to take up water. Even then I still get the odd few with BER. I think feeding and watering toms is a self taught science, the more you practice, the better you get :)

hi, sorry for the delay in replying, i will be able to provide some pictures later this evening

I am pretty sure it isnt from lack of watering, i water them with one pint of water every morning at about 8.30, and once a week i put aome tomatoe right in it (not sure if thats what its called, my grandad gave me it!) each plant is in its own pot,  i will take a photo and post in this thread at 5ish tonight

Blossom end rot as MOS said.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

i dont no how to find out the pot size, i will have to post thepicture later

i really thought it wouldnt be too hard to do this, and it was going so well with quite a few tomatoes on the plants

i only started doing this after i planted my chillis as my mum said i could have a couple of tomato plants as i was getting interested in it

i may give up this summer for now and concentrate on my chillis and then start properly from a fresh next time :D

Pot size?

Measure the diameter across the top of the pot.  ;)
3" across = a 3" inch pot
