Do you need to put straw around strawberries (sorry if this sound stupid - we are new allotmenteers!)  :-)

Ye i always do.. 1 it stops them rotting on wet soil and 2 seems to stop slugs attacking them :)

Much more important, it stops the fruit getting dirty so I can eat them straight away.

Mine are growing through black plastic mulch (Tescos) or you could use newspaper and pin it down with wire or a few stones

I buy a bag of meadow hay or the like that is usually used for guinea pigs/rabbits. It's probably not as cheap as buying a whole bale of hay from somewhere but it's more convenient for me with only a few strawberry plants.
