Title: Magpie Vs Rabbits
Post by: The Red Baron on May 23, 2013, 07:09
Not an allotment question but hey ho, hopefully someone can help. I keep two rabbits in a big run/hutch at home....and we have 3 magpies that over the last week are constantly hassling the bunnies. Also keep pecking at them through the bars. Any ideas on how to drive the magpies away? Thanks
Tony

Magpies will kill baby rabbits so I don't think it is particularly unusual that they would try to attack adults. They are probably feeding young just now and feeling bolder than usual. I can't think of anything other than an additional physical barrier to keep them away from your pets, as any sort of noise scaring would probably upset the rabbits too.

We've had a couple around our aviary in the last couple of weeks.

They cant get their beaks in the wire mesh which is 1/2" x 1/2" so they are quite protected. Is there any way you could get some and cover the area the magpies are pecking through.
