Hi

My dad has loads of carrots in his beds, I have been reading about storing them in sand so I bought a load but the sand is damp, would this be a problem?

Unless you need to lift the carrots you can leave them in the soil and lift when you want them.

For storage the sand needs to be slightly damp or the carrots will shrivel, on the other hand if it is soaking - the carrots start to rot

Thanks for that, there is no rush to harvest them all be he has loads!

I think I shall store a box load and keep taking them out I his garden for now!

Would you recommend earthing them up or covering in straw to keep out frosts?

If you leave them in the ground slugs will eat some and later in the Winter mice will have a nibble - more than a nibble, they will hollow them out from the bottom so that what you think is a good carrot is only a shell.

I am on light soil and earth them up plus a layer of whatever insulation I have to hand, straw, aparagus fronds, spent compost.
