saw a documentry once years ago and it was about things we eat that affect us with out knowing , one thing was poppy seed beagles and a woman driving to work ate 2 in her car and she was tested and failed , im not sure if it was part of an experiment , but aparently that over consumption can have an effect .

Hi all. :)
If I may help to clarify somewhat....
Poppy seeds of the Opium variety contain so little 'active ingredient', particularly after baking, that one would have to consume literally tens pounds for them to have any 'effect'.  :tongue2:
Drug-test kits that detect opiates though, can detect very minute portions of opiods in a person's system, so it is quite feasible that consuming a couple of poppy-seed bagels or so could produce an indication of opiate use, however small.
No effects though I'm pleased to say, so you can use them without worries.

Hope this helps..... And if it does, my very first post on this forum will not have been wasted. :)

Hi Nigel. Welcome to the forums. :)

I was more concerned with flavour than narcotic effect but it's good to know we won't be sparked out for a day  :D

Our first poppy is out today so we're looking forward to them ripening and then the baking test can get underway.

I think you will find the seeds of the Oriental Poppy are very much smaller than the seeds of the opium poppy - hope they are still useable. Keep us posted
