Poppy seeds for culinary use
« on: April 30, 2009, 22:08 »
Can seeds from any poppy be used for bread baking ?

I suggested something more exciting (we like to live on the edge) and have lots of poppies in the garden but we're not entirely sure which sort of poppy they are. If it matters, I'll post an ID photo in GG forum. :)

Thanks for help.

Thanks mum. I'll have to post a photo to find out exactly what kind of poppy we have. It's something ornamental but may still be edible.

Shouldn't be too long before one opens. :)

Best to check as I am unsure if the seeds of opium poppies should be consumed ......

According to wikipedia (the source of all knowledge, true or otherwise) the opium poppy Papaver somniferum is a source of culinary seeds.

I know there are many varieties and I can't imagine they're all edible, or at least pleasant, so I will check what we have. The leaves are huge at the moment which is probably no clue btu I'll look through last year's photos for the flowers.

saw a documentry once years ago and it was about things we eat that affect us with out knowing , one thing was poppy seed beagles and a woman driving to work ate 2 in her car and she was tested and failed , im not sure if it was part of an experiment , but aparently that over consumption can have an effect .

We use seeds from oriental/opium poppy in bread making (+ capsules on stems in dried flower arrangements).

In addition to producing masses of seed for culinary use, the Opium Poppy is so easy to grow, decorates all the odd corners of my plot, comes in a wide range of colours and varieties ( have you seen Hen & Chicks? - the really double ones like paeonies - the red and white one Danish Flag? ), is loved by bees but best of all it self seeds - I haven't bought any seed for 8 years!
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Our poppies are red, grow up to about 2 or 3ft high, the flowers are about 4" across and the leaf rosette is about 3ft across and 2ft high. I know there are a lot of varieties but it may help to narrow it down  :D

Sounds like the opium poppy to me -are the leaves sort of silvery/bluey/green?

We're pretty sure they're oriental poppies (papaver orientalis) which means we can sprinkle the seeds on our bread ad lib. :)

Here's a couple of photos I've found from last summer. You can tell by the polythene over the chook run which is weighed down by rainwater  ::)

Be a few months yet but worth the wait for a free supply. Thanks everybody for advice. :)
