Poppy seeds
« on: November 03, 2015, 18:46 »
Can you eat all poppy seeds or is it just certain ones? I had those rogue pinky/ purple ones self set on the plot & nipped the seed pods off before they scattered themselves far & wide. They've all spilled out now in a tub,can I put them on to my home baked bread or in recipes?

No - you can only eat seeds from papaver somniferum and paeoniflorum varieties, the others are poisonous.

If you don't know exactly what they are, I wouldn't eat them. But then I wouldn't know how to tell the difference. My seed heads are still maturing. Can send you seed if you want it for next year.

That's a somniferum too, isn't it? Or have you got a peony version? Will cross with other somniferums, but not across subspecies according to internet wisdom. I sow mine late and have an exciting race against the frosts. No other poppies flowering on my site currently. So far the seeds have come true.
