Poppy seeds.
« on: October 04, 2013, 19:27 »
In my spice rack I have a pot of poppy seeds, in my shed I also have a packet of poppy seeds.   Are they the same and can I eat both? ::)

Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

They are more or less the same but the ones in the shed may have been treated with something so I think that it is best not to try. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for that springlands, I collected the seeds from our own poppies so hopefully there shouldn't be any chemicals on them.  Thanks once again.
 ;)

Cheers,   Tony.

Can all poppy seeds be eaten?
My Ben seemed to think it was only certain varieties that had edible seeds.

I always believed that you could eat any poppy seeds and I did check online before replying to KW which seemed to confirm my view however after what you said Emma I checked again and came across some different views. I am going to PM Kleftiwallah to let him know.

The seeds you find for sale in the baking isle are somniferum, or Opium poppy.

Seeds may contain traces of opium Alkaloids.
