Lifting and storing begonia tubers.
« on: August 24, 2021, 14:21 »
My begonias are still in full throttle so I'll leave them until, say, end of September or should I take them out later? If they have produced tubers do I remove both the remaining flowers and foliage or just the flowers, and how do I store them over winter? We have a small downstairs loo which has no heating so am thinking of putting them on a drying rack then later into something to keep them dry.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I lift mine when they start to collapse but before a frost.  I clean off as much root and soil as possible and snap of the stem.   I leave them to dry for a couple of days in the kitchen, wrap them in newspaper, put them in a box and put them in the attic until February / March.  The important part is to let them dry before you store them.

Thanks Debz. I'll do that and put them in the attic when dry - never thought of using it for that. Great idea!

I do the same, sometimes I use a mix of fine wood scapings (not sawdust) from the pet shop and shredded newspaper if I can be bothered  :D  But at the moment mine look stunning they have gone on and on.  Mrs B
PS, don't forget to label the colours, like wot I do. :)

Sound advice there Mrs B as I've got a mix of colours that need keeping separate so I can organise my colour pallet for next year.
