We are fortunate to have maybe half an acre of woodland with about a dozen mature beech, sycamore and ash trees. This week, despite the bitter weather, the local bird population has been twittering its collective heart out. To encourage their romantic tendencies, I've just put up three new nesting boxes. Also sowed a packet of Ailsa Craig onion seed and placed it in the heated propagator in the greenhouse. Planning to start some celeriac seeds of this afternoon too.
Anyone else accelerating the end of winter?

I too put up a tit box about a week ago. I had a sparrow box for a long time but it was always ignored, (rent to high ?) There is lots of activity around the new box, including the sparrows and robins. :D Mrs Bouquet

I have put together my gardeners beehive. Positioned it south east and now just waiting for any signs of wild bees. We already have 16 assorted nest boxes , 2 bat boxes , 3 hedgehog houses all different , bumble bee nest compost heap , (hopefully to encourage the grass snake we had to lay ). We have nature and wildlife pretty much covered. The one thing I'm jealous of is people with swallows or house Martin's. Trouble is they stay at the other end of the village as that is where the mud ponds are.

We tend to get adders rather than grass snakes and I'm not going to encourage them. Plenty of bats roost in an ancient stone dovecote we have and no shortage either of swallows and house martins. Might just make a couple of hedgehog houses though as we still see plenty of them around and I want to keep it that way

Just ordered 3 bird boxes (Tit, Robin & Sparrow) and tips on where to place them would be welcome.
