Title: Blueberries
Post by: Elaine G on May 30, 2012, 20:34
My blueberries really need to go into bigger pots. I guess I should have done it earlier in the year, but life got in the way!
So, should I pot them up now - they have flowers and some berries, or should I wait till they have fruited and pot up ready for next year. Or even repot next spring.

Thanks

Elaine

Iiwm I would move them carefully to larger pots  now as being in small pots will make it difficult to keep them evenly moist.

Ericaceous compost of course and keep them somewhere sheltered and out of full sun for a couple of weeks until they settle

I bought two plants and they both had lots of flowers in 6" pots from b&q. I re-potted them into two 17" pots straight away, they didn't grew more flowers and didn't lose any either. Now flowers fell and I guess I just need to wait the tiny berries to grow bigger and bigger.

By the way, they are all in my garden, not the plot. I made a net for them to avoid birds. Do you also netting them up?

I always net mine once some berries have reached full size... blackbirds love them and last year even the sparrows in the garden joined in until I spotted the gap in the netting

Thanks for your prompt answers, I will get them into bigger pots this weekend.
As for nets, I will try to get the nets on in good time this year so as not to share with the birdies  ::)

Darned birds don't even wait until they're almost ripe before stealing them so don't dawdle on the netting.

No picture but I can tell you what I did last year

Poked three canes in the edge of the pot (about 4ft long) with empt bottles upside down on them, then draped soft bird netting over them so that it was fairly well clear of the plants (which are about 18ins tall)

Weighted down the edges with a couple of smaller pots which had flowers in -- looked OK

I replanted mine last week into a large tub with ericaceous compost it had previously been straight in the soil planted with well rotted manure and pine needle mix. It was starting to loose leaves and going yellow so rather than loose it all together I moved it. It did not flower so no fruit this year but with a bit of luck I will have turned things around . Mine is about three feet high and two feet across so not a small plant to start off with. I will probably buy a couple more for next year and pot them up straight away with ericaceous compost.
