Marrow Rum.
« on: August 08, 2013, 11:16 »
As a wipper snapper I can just about remember dad doing marrow rum. Needless to say I never got to try it..

Now I've a big un up the lottie that I've had my eye for a while...now I remember dad would fill the marrow with brown sugar, put it in a sprout net and hang it in the pantry over a bowl. This don't seem too good an idea to me, what about bugs & fruit flys. I'm wondering if there's a better way of making it, maybe cover the whole thing with fine insect netting while it's doing "it's thing".

As anyone on here done the said Rum recipe?.....

Oddly enough, I suggested this to someone only yesterday (they were asking what they could do with the marrows they were growing as they didn't like marrow!  ::)).

I wouldn't mind giving it a go, just have to find a marrow!

I have heard about marrow wine but never rum, is it likely to be the same just under a different name.

People rave about the marrow wine. I am clueless when it comes to this type of stuff but we do have a few marrows

My mum and dad made this one year when I was little - it exploded and covered everything in the linen cupboard with sticky goo!!!  I don't think the smell ever went away despite the vigorous cleaning!

Am sorry it happened to you but glad this didn't just happen in books - it is a very funny moment in Digger's Diary.

BQ... It has to be wine, for it to be rum it would have to include distillation in some way. I think the reason it got called rum is the liquid  that one finished up with,  dark, sugary and maybe strong in the abv%.

Rowan...I can't stand to eat marrows or courgettes, but make the marrow into wine, and the courgettes into a cake, very much like carrot cake....just can't go wrong.

Mrslev..."This sounds AMAZING!!!!" the only way to find out is have a go..

Angelavdavis....WOW... exploding marrows..the mind boggles...one can't imagine the mess...I had a friend years back who had me show him how to make elderberry wine. It was made and I told him to put it somewhere warm, but to keep an eye on it because it may come out through the airlock. It did overflow....where you may ask??  in the airing cupboard top of the stairs, where his wife put all of her whites.
Sheets, school shirts,  I stayed out the way for a few weeks....
