It's Official I Hate The Wind!
« on: June 08, 2012, 17:19 »
I have a feeling that the fates conspire to ensure that each time I plant out French Beans, Courgette and my solitary Squash a howling gale descends over our most exposed of plots, leaving my formerly vibrant and healthy plants limp and minus a few stems. A mild depression has moved in (no the weather-girl variety) and I am wondering if said plants will recover to produce any veg. Alternatively will I have time to plant directly new French Bean seeds? All words of encouragement, experience and hope will be most welcome.

From a wind blown West Sussex.

I can only offer you what I learned from this happening here last year.

I have made tents of debris netting over the beans, squashes and sweetcorn to protect them from high wind (or scorching sun hahaha) and so far they are looking OK

It is only netting held on to an old cloche frame with clothes pegs, and for the beans around the frame with cloths pegs.

Also stops them getting beaten down by heavy rain

Hope that helps for next year, or maybe this year if the plants at salvagable  :D

i remember last year the first week in june, strong winds, blew over a couple of my dwarf bean plants and wrecked them, stunted courgette plant, stunted corn, below average temps, wet, wet, wet.not planted much out yet things are ready but waiting for the right moment . the waiting has really tested my patience but i think it will be worth it .things will catch up. :)

Doesn't look like we are going to get one this year either. :(

Mee too... My courgette plants are also looking very battered, I didn't know if they will recover or not...? It is still windy here, I'm fed up of the sound of it houling around the house, when will it ever end?

One of my tomato plants has been snapped in two by the wind. I should think you have quite a bit of time to plant your French beans but put some in paper pots so as to be able to plug any gaps. My Frenchies are being attacked by the slugs at the moment.

I went to the plot today to find all three courgette plans snapped clean apart laying 6ft from their original position!!  :(

They were proper healthy and a good size too.  Do I have time to sow some more now and get a good crop?

I'll be gutted if not or I'll have to buy some plants which really grates!!!

Sown indoors in warm conditions courgettes should be up in under a week so you should be OK (mine are struggling outdoors at the moment so you're not that far behind!)

Courgette plants have large leaves and comparatively weak stems, especially when small, and can rock themselves to destruction in windy conditions - a short stick pushed into the soil at an angle helps to restrict the movement - you may still lose the odd leaf but not the whole plant.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older
