Which allotment shall I have
« on: April 04, 2007, 13:37 »
Will know tomorrow whether I got a plot on the new allotment site. If it is yes I have to choose between two and I need advice. Plot 1 is in the middle of the field although close to car access, very sunny but exposed to wind from the south and east, also quite a way from the water bowser (no tap on site!) PLot 2 is next to the road, there is a ditch with a stream exactly on the west border and on the other side of the ditch is a native 'hedge' about 15 foot high. Also a hedge on the North side. So closer to water and sheltered but not so sunny, also not sure about midges etc in summer. Both are level with the same sort of soil.
I intend to grow mostly winter veg, fruit and stuff that tkes a lot of space like asparagus as I have a veg plot at home for stuff that needs constant care.

Which plot would you take and why, please? :?

if you are going to grow mainly winter veg i think you would probably be better with the sheltered site although maybe my logic is completely wrong as i am quite new to this. somebody will know for sure and let you know soon

I can see where you are coming from lucywil thinking of the shelter.

My feelings would be for Plot 1 though.  Water not important in winter, or for fruit.  Not many winds from South.  East winds cold but infrequent.  Catch all the sun.

sheltered from the nth with sun from the east and west  and open to the sout is the best way a plot should be ... i personally would take the one with the stream   as it has hedges on the northern end and western it will have sun from dawn to about 4 pm in high summer ... and in the case of the stream i would use the water from it ( bucket on a rope . or a pole and swing and im would also net the stream if there was a chance it had fish in it

I agree with whisky golf, get yourself a water butt, the sun is more important for you as well as your plot.

Plot 2 is probably best for fruit and such like, I'm thinking of them being sheltered from cold winds etc early in the year, on an open site you may start to loose blossom from a late cold blow, raspberries do quite well in a shaded aspect being edge of the woods plants. Stream OK but be careful not to get caught extracting water if you don't own it  !

extracting water only becomes illegal if you use power i believe and plan to take more than so many " gallons " per year above normal irrigation uses   somebody may enlighten me different  :)

I would go for plot 1 as has the sunshine.....wind breaks can be built, water can be collected or imported but you can't hire the sun, and in winter you need as much light as you can get given the short daylight hours.   IMHO.

   You're prob no further on now than when you posed the question.

Can't have both. And the stream IS the water supply for the allotment, with a pump to fill the bowser, so no problem about using it.
And can't you all agree? please???

Still waiting for 'phone call about it

And here's poor little me still waiting on an allotment coming free and propably with another 2-3 year wait.  Sniff.  Toss a coin, seems both sites have pros and cons.

have a dig into the soil on each one and compare the 2
feed the soil not the plants
