Moss ?
« on: December 30, 2011, 23:01 »
My lottie seems to have attracted a lot of moss at the moment.

I have it on some pathways, on top of some shadey areas and even in the greenhouse borders.

What should I be doing to get rid of it?

I've considered scraping it off, digging it in, trying to kill it off with Jeys/Domestos/Bleach?

Any ideas from the forum experts would be very welcome?

Moss is a symptom of shade and poor drainage.

Do not under any circumstances use the products you've mentioned on soil.  They aren't licensed for it and will do lots of harm to soil organisms.

On the hard surfaces, try a stiff brush and washing up liquid.  On the soil, can you improve the drainage?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

My plot is sandy and drains well, but still tends to be mossy :(
I think it tends to grow on acidy soils, so do a soil test to see if you need to add lime.

Last year I added calcified seaweed and haven't got anywhere near as much growing now ;)

Thanks for a quick reply Yorkie.

The soil which is outside which is affected is an area I haven't used this year having only taken over in March so the surface is caked and quite wet.

The areas in my greenhouse border have been used successfully this year for tomatoes and seemed to drain ok during the summer but has not fully dried out and moss has developed on the surface.

I will be digging these areas as soon as I can but is it advisable to scrape the existing moss off the surface first?

I'd dig it straight in!

But also look at soil test as Mum suggests and improving the drainage.

I've been getting moss on the surface of my troughs and raised beds with all this rain. Doesn't seem to affect the plants and I pick off what I can and ruffle the surface a bit if I'm in the mood.
It will die off when it dries out.
