Shop bought Butternut Squash Seedlings
« on: June 04, 2013, 06:02 »
About a month ago, I collected some seeds from a shop bought butternut squash. Planted them individually in pots and have now germinated very well. Its about time to plant outdoors. My question is whether its worthwhile planting shop bought seeds of butternut or for that matter, chillies and peppers? Anyone experimented before? Thanks.

No one will be able to say for definite whether it's worthwhile or not without knowing exactly what you're planting.

Was it a seed from an F1? Was it a strain suited to our climate? Just a couple of examples.

The one thing for sure is that you should have some fun finding out, with hopefully no disappointments!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have successfully grown peppers from store bought seed many times. I have always avoided butternut, simply because they need such a long growing season, even when you buy seeds for our climate. However, as DD says if you have the space, it is always fun to experiment. I shall be having fun this year as I have muddled up all my squash and courgette plants so have no idea what I will be getting! ::)

I've got a thread going http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=103263.msg1189757#msg1189757
about a seed started last year, which turns out to be a butternut, I think!

Wow, they look really good for this time of the year!  Mine just about 6" tall with about 4 'true leaves now. I'll get mine outdoors asap and we can compare results late summer!!

It looks like it might be possible to overwinter butternut squashes, but its an awful lot of cosseting for one butternut!

Just like to update on this topic. I'm happy to say that all 6 shop bought butternut squashes have all produced reasonable sized squashes. About 2 - 3 per plant. Some are about 8 - 9" long. I can see some more squashes still trying to form! So I'm quite pleased with them! Will definitely save the seeds for next year's sowing! :)

Did you grow courgettes or other squash on your veg plot - if you did they could have cross pollinated with something else  ;) the risk is even higher that they will have, than when they were pollinated in a field of all the same variety.

What would be the risk, Mum? Would I get sort of a hybrid? Or worst no fruits? I had a lot of different squashes, pumpkins and courgettes on the plot! Should I risk it and sow a couple of seeds next year? Or maybe I shouldn't bother saving curcubit seeds of any sort?

:blink:Opps! There goes my plan to be self sufficient on seeds! How does one keep 'heirloom' seeds then? If cross polination is so common, it would be impossible to save seeds. Because even if I just keep on type of squash, for example, I will still encounter cross pollination as there are plots with all sorts of squash growing.

Interesting this business of saving curcubit seeds. Basically its like 'preserving the virginity' of the species. A rather disturbing thought cross my mind...
