Hi All,
New to the site and new to allotment gardening. In fact new to gardening in general I suppose.
I planted some rhubarb last week only to find that something had pecked the tops off. Returned a couple of days later to find that one had been completely dug up.
Covered it with some chicken wire for now.
Not sure what was responsible though.

we also bought some potatoes for planting in july from marshalls. they said you could leave them inthe ground up until Christmas. we had to dig them up in october as all the plans died. we did get some spuds from them but nothing like i was expecting, they we small and few and far between. don't think i will bother with them next year. emailed marshalls as all their stuff is meant to be gaurenteed but never got a reply

if you plant spuds outside that late they need good drainage and a somekind of covering eg fleece,
some farmers near me who grow very early new potatoes plant towards the end of feb /early march(weather permiting) and leave theres covered with fleece until the end of april/early may.also they are all planted on south facing sloping fields .they will uncover them once to earth them up and harvest them late may so they can charge £2 a pound for new potatoes,they make a quick killing.
i done it this year with a few rows and it did work i picked some towards the end of may.theres a couple of pics in the album bit.
