Ground cover to kill weeds
« on: June 06, 2020, 10:47 »
Good morning. I’ve taken over a plot that needs a lot of work. Half of it is grass and weeds and I have been advised to cover it with black plastic and leave for a year to kill the weeds. My question is what black plastic should I use, does anyone know the cheapest way to do this, any help appreciated many thanks. I have found some scaffolding plastic which is the cheapest thing I can find to do this job and attached a picture, do you think this is okay to use thanks Lou

The site's advice for clearing a plot is here https://www.allotment-garden.org/allotment-information/clearing-new-allotment/
It's always best to strim the weeds back first, whatever you cover with. If you can get cardboard ( behind supermarkets/DIY stores and bike shops are good places to check ) this also makes good covering material as long as you can weigh it down with something, wood bricks clods of earth etc, to stop it blowing away. The advantage of cardboard is that it will rot away eventually and will improve the soil a little bit while doing so.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with the new plot  :)

Welcome to the site and congrats on your new lotty.

If you can't get large pieces of cardboard, then I would suggest a black weed suppressant fabric rather than solid plastic, if you can stretch to it.

The woven fabric lets air and water through, and so the ground beneath stays in better condition than the solid plastic.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
