Looking for recommendations on potato planters
« on: April 25, 2012, 22:20 »
Anyway folks, all the ground space is pretty much accounted for and I now fancy some christmass spuds  :tongue2: :tongue2:

Any recommendations on where to buy these at good value, would prefer bigger to stick more tubbers in rather than lots of pots.

Thanks
New grower here - handle with care!!

If I grow any potatoes in 'pots' and run out of actual pots, I always save the bags my compost came in and use them.  I fold the tops over until I get something about 18 high, then when the potato haulm gets higher, I just unfold the top of the bag a bit and 'earth' the potatoes up in the bag.

Make sure there are a few holes for drainage though!

Thanks for the tip, about to use  few bags, how many tubbers would you stick in a 75ltr bag?.

Personally I'd only put 2 in it as I like them to have lots of room, but I think with the potato bags you can buy, they'd say 3-4.  But I use some of my own compost and/soil too, not just the expensive bought stuff.

But someone will probably come on here and say something different, we all do things our own ways!   ;) ;)

I grew early potatoes last year and I am extending it this year. (Rocket and Lady Cristl) I use the supermarket black plastic cut flower buckets. You can get them free or pay about £1 for 8. One seed in each with my own compost. You will get about 3 or 4 reasonable potatoes, enough for one person.
So working backwards, how many are coming to dinner and add two buckets just in case and that's what you need to grow.

75l bag of damp soil is heavy and you may not be able to move it. (or the bag rips) I am experimenting with maincrop desiree one in a big pot, planted in soil but topping up with sawdust to reduce the weight.

The 75ltr bags I re-use Ivor are rolled down to about half way.  Still a bit heavy at times yes, but why would you want to keep moving them?  One year I even used old chicken food bags.  They were right down the bottom of the garden, so out of the way of everyone!

It was just that Poolman wanted to grow Christmas potatoes. Because it involves the end of the growing season, he may want to move them to get better sunlight or into coldframe to avoid autumn frosts.

Well we have a big family so I would count on a good ten to fifteen so I best get busy busy busy.

I have some a big sheltered porch area outside, was hoping they would do well

I was browsing last night and found this site on potatoes.  Included  is growing in pots. The type of potato and results obtained. Lots of other interesting material.
