That sounds like stem rot.

They could well have been over-watered and probably a bit cold as well.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

DD's right.  When we went away 2 weeks ago, I gave my greenhouse a good watering and covered the seedlings with fleece.  When we got back everything looked fine, but I have now lost all 6 of my melons and 6 of my cucumbers to stem rot!

Mine are still in the house, about 3 inches tall with 4 leaves but I know from past experience then can keel over for no apparent reason so I will be sowing 4 more this weekend as a type of insurance ;)

I would say like DD  -  yours have gone with a combination of overwtering, cold and its been very damp too

They are such divas! I water mine only the tiniest bit on a warm day. Those have been few and far between so I've held off and touch wood they look fine.  For now that is, they seem to keel over without provocation  :nowink:  You can get them to a good size, and into their final pots yet they still have a death wish.  Why do we bother  :D

I've not watered mine for ages as I'm afraid they'll keel. They look absolutely fine and dandy.
So, hold back on the watering. Water from the bottom and only a little bit and don't leave them sitting in it at any price

I'm down to the last cuke of a second sowing. When this one kegs over it's off to the garden center in a week or two and buy a ready made one.

Divas dosent even start to describe 'em! I've one left. It looked sturdy enough. The seed leaves have given up the ghost, but it's got one nice true leaf and another starting to show. good stem. Being a nice warm day with a good bit of sun, I thought I'd give it a spell in the greenhouse to give it a bit more light. WRONG! 2 hours later, one very unhappy cuke. Leaf shrivelling at the edges and starting to wilt. Brought it back indoors and onto it's place on the windowsill and it looks as though it may recover.

Update: It didn't recover.
