This is not a true Huckleberry (which is a shrub) but I found at https://www.kitchengardenseeds.com/garden-huckleberry.html  Providing that link so that you can see what I'm talking about (I can remove the link if needed).

Has anyone tried these?  They sound worth trying (maybe next year) but I was curious if anyone has experience with them.

I'll take that as a "haven't tried it" then!  :)

I definitely need to try it, & I'll report back. Reading the care notes from the seed company, it seems to a bit more tolerant than tomatoes, Eve accepting some shade and still producing.

We're not really ignoring you
It just seems very rare in the UK. The RHS only lists 2 suppliers for the whole UK.

Not feeling ignored, really!

I do think this plant could be a good choice, as people writings reviews indicate it's productive from Canada down to Texas.

Also, for organic gardeners, it reportedly works as a good 'trap' plant for aphids, keeping the bugs off other plants, without losing it's own productivity.

Have you looked through the ‘similar topics’ listed at the bottom of this topic ?

I have looked at those, thank you. One thread was started by someone that took seeds from a plant found on an allotment (?!  !?) with leaves and berries eaten green. I hope he is OK.

Some other posts seem to refer to true huckleberry (Vaccinium and relatives).

One thread does have some useful information or links in it. Whether people liked them or not seemed to be related to proper ripeness, the best reaction seemed to be from a member who used truly ripe berries. The seed company advises using only fruit ripened to the point of softness and a dull skin, not shiny.

I'm still considering giving it a try, as it may produce in partially shaded areas where not much else will produce.

Hi S_P,

Gave these a go over 30 years ago, came across a pack of seeds in a shop and decided to give them a go as a novelty crop that year.  Hadn't seem them before, or since.

They grew easily on sandy soil with little shade, didn't have any pests or problems. We didn't really know what to do with the fruit (pre-internet of course!), and I remember microwaving some to a very purple stew.

The other thing I remember about them was that it felt wrong to be picking fruit from a plant whose appearance reminds you of other members of the solanum family, particularly deadly nightshade.

Hi G&R!  You are right about the internet and what to do with the fruit! There's enough information about how to use them, sufficient so that I think making a pie or something else would be possible.

It appears that people either love them or hate them (I think that has to do with ripeness. Our native/wild persimmon would be hated too if people only ate the unripe ones!)

Well, update (of sorts).

I ordered my collection of seeds for the spring and summer, but I apparently accidentally either (1) left the garden huckleberries out, or (2) accidentally deleted them from my order.   :(

Oh well.

I still intend to give them a try in the future.  Maybe next year?
