Poorly Chicken
« on: March 30, 2009, 17:30 »
Guys

One of my girls has suddenly started limping due to something wrong with her left leg...! won't put her toes down on the ground

Had a look at her foot and can't see anything obvious signs, no cuts, grazes etc and gently pressed her pads etc but not a squeak out of her to indicate any pain ?

is it possible for a chicken to have the human equivalent of a sprained ankle or the like ?

Any ideas ?

Hi
I was just about to post up a similar question as my hen Gloria was sat on top of a garden chair today, went to jump off and got her leg caught in the slats at the top.  She flapped around, which put more pressure on her leg then once we released her she limped across the garden, stopped and hasn't put weight on it since. She's now gone to bed early.
I don't want to steal your posting, but I'd be interested in what people say to you so I can see what to do with my Gloria.
I hope our girls are ok.

I should imagine that it is quite possible for a bird to hurt its self like that.  A chickens foot and leg contain tendons and ligaments that can get strained like any other animal.  May be what your hen has done.  Time would be the only healer in that case and rest.  If you can rest a chicken.  You could keep it contained in small area so it wouldn't agrevate it further by walking on it too much for a few days and see how it goes.

She's a Daisybelle and quite a big awkward bird

http://www.moorlandspoultry.co.uk/daisy-belle.html

it's possible that she jumped off the bench in the garden awkwardly. I am keeping an eye on her, she is roosting quietly under the tree with plenty of food and water, while the other 3 have done their usual and escaped out of the garden onto the green opposite....for abit of extreme free ranging...

so much for the concern and attention they gave her yesterday... ;)

thx everyone
