Should have asked this ages ago........

I've got hanging feeders - the pidgeons raid the one in the garden and the slugs (mission impossible) can slither down 1 ft of wire and help themselves (I've seen the trails) in the coop.  Do the hens regard this food as contaminated and undesirable?

The treadle feeder isn't easy to adapt for Pekin use (I've made a lightweight platform) - they like to dine together and not take turns.

Any suggestions?

Little hens big slugs and they visit by night.........if only they did eat them !!!

Hi Nerdle. You could try an orange cut in half and placed flesh side down in the run. The slugs love them and will still be in there when the hens come out in the morning.

Hey that's a new one! These slugs are giants and I know my hens won't touch them - tried it before.  I have to cut grapes into tiny bits for them!!!! The dish of beer is the other trick for gardeners.

I've tried slug proofing before for my plants - copper, crushed egg shells - nothing works.  Perhaps I should hang these from the ceiling (6') - it would be a rare slug to slither down that but might be a bit swingy for the girls to peck out of.  Or perhaps the current 1' drop but with fishing line - a sluggy tightrope walk?

My Grandad did this but used grapefruit skins. It did work

I use 4 pints milk cartons,cut a square gap out so far up(depending on depth of food added) so hens can get there heads in to eat,i cut through the handle so i can hook on  the wire fencing but u could just hang it for mid air.
Very rare it gets wet with the rain  which i had a huge wastage problem with,i wood pigeon couldnt work out how to feed from it

I have used plastic milk. Cartons to good effect as well. If you leave the handle on you can tie it to the wire or anything convenient and it also does not get knocked over either. Good recycling and can replace at any time. Can be used for food or water.
