Shaver Brown - good chickens?
« on: April 29, 2012, 17:08 »
I've just spoken to my supplier and he's got some ready to go from next weekend.  16 weeks old.  These will be my first chickens.  Are they appropriate.  I want friendly, good layers and resilient

YES!  The shavers are the same sort of cross as all the other ordinary brown chickens like ISA's and warrens.  They will lay well, be resilient and friendly.

I've just got back 5 of my last flock of Shaver Blacks who are 11 months old.  Really pleased, lovely eggs!

They have a fenced off run.  Got a 1 & 2 year old so can't have them roaming free otherwise the girls will be playing poop.  The 2 year old is a thumb sucker and the 1 year old still eats everything, so hardly appropriate.

One of my friends had Shavers & they were so friendly they used to sit on her dad's lap when he was riding round in his wheelchair.  Very trouble free & good layers too.  (Only slight problem was that one of them became obsessed with laying her egg in the house...that's the human house, not the hen house...leave any door or window open & she'd hop in, turf the cat out of his bed & lay an egg in it...well, I guess that's 'friendly'!  :D :D :D)

I'd love to have them popping into my house but hubby would go mental.  What he doesn't know won't hurt him though I suppose!

I think he would know...eggs weren't the only things that violet used to leave behind...I don't think it's possible to 'house train' chickens...
