Choosing new bantam
« on: February 24, 2014, 12:09 »
We had 2 wyandottes in our back garden but unfortunately one has now died .

We have decided to get 2 new ones but are stuck on which breed to get.
We want one which is a reasonably good layer, bantam size and not too broody.

Any suggestions?

Hi Redgoat,

Whereabouts are you, please? I really want some wyandotte bantams, but can't get any within a reasonabe distance....would love to be able to find some.

As for other banties, I can't help, sorry. Have you tried the poultry pages, here?  The list of suppliers is quite extensive (even if I can't find wyandottes!).

I have only ever kept banntys  :)

I too have wyanadotts  :)

I also have Dutch miniatures - brilliant little layers for their size
a speckled sussex and a  white sussex

a little buff rock , she is so sweet but now at 3 years old egg production going down

my Rhode island reds are loud and bossy but good layers

and my favourite one was a new Hampshire red - she lived till 8 and layed right to the end

I tend to avoid breeds with foot feathers  :nowink:

but my best one of all is bonny bonnet a whoops breed - x of allsorts , hard as nails and so very healthy

here she is bonnet and all  :D

Im a big fan of wyandottes and have a couple as well as silkies.

If you want to avoid  broodiness, probably give silkies a miss. You cant guarantee any breed wont go broody

Its difficult to advise you on what to get because everyone has their own experiences and preferences and it will also depend on what is available in your area.

Chrysalis, have you tried putting a wanted ad on pre-loved? You may have  to wait a few more months as its very early in the season.

Hi barley, just wondering if you have any further advice on bantams? I too have always had LF and am thinking about a new flock of bantams.
The Wyandotte seems to get a lot of good praise, all year egg laying is important to me and not just a few eggs in spring time. Im attracted to the bantams as Ive read their eggs are 2/3's the size of LF eggs and yet they eat much less grain.

Best Regards,

The main advantage to bantam keeping is their size

you don't need such a large hen house or if you do have one you can squeeze twice as many in LOL

they lay just as good as large fowl and their eggs are surprisingly large considering - most large breeds come in bantam size and the dutch bantams are roughly the size of a large blackbird / thrush

this may help you in your search http://www.chickens.allotment-garden.org/poultry-suppliers/bantam-breeder-UK.php

remember most pure breeds will only lay over winter for their first 2 laying seasons after that they will stop in October and start laying again in February/March time, unless you rig up lighting on a timer to simulate longer daytime hours.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks, I'd like to get it right and choose a breed that will give me eggs all year, being small fowl I can keep extra to hopefully give us eggs every day ... any thoughts are most welcome. tia
