Feeding potatos in containers
« on: April 01, 2024, 12:47 »
I add potato fertilizer when planting my potatoes in containers. This is the only feed that my first earlies get but in previous years I have fed my maincrop low nitrogen fertilizer later in the growing season and got great crops. Is this necessary and if so what product do folk use?

I add a fork full of well rotted manure to the mix in the bottom two thirds of my containers when growing main crop potatoes.
I fill the bags to the brim with compost mix at the planting stage.
Before the flowers appear I will top up the containers if necessary but will always add some potato fertiliser at this stage to help them along just because they are in the containers longer than first earliest.
My first early potatoes get planted into just compost with potato fertiliser with no additional feed during their growing time.
I use the potato fertiliser from the cheep shops  :nowink:

I think I used BFB then Vitax Q4 last year and had a jolly good crop.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I had much better crops of 1st earlies and maincrop last year after adding spuds galore into the holes where I dropped the seeds in. I also gave a top dressing of the same after they'd all started sprouting, but I also watered more often than I did the previous year!

I do the same as Goosegirl but with the occasional feed of Tomorite in the last 4 weeks before harvesting. I grow my first batch in containers in the greenhouse hence the water and feeding. When grown outside I omit the Tomorite. Have had good results in the past but this can vary dependent on the weather. All being well my first batch will be ready for harvesting in 2 - 3 weeks time, fingers crossed.
