Tomatoes
« on: January 15, 2016, 11:24 »
Morning everyone & a belated Happy New Year ☺.
We only grow 2 or 3 tomato plants in an unheated greenhouse
along with a cucumber & last year 2 crops of peas (one after the
other ) grown in a big trug & a 4ft wigwam. My question is when
is our best time to set seeds, to early they are very leggy by the
time it's warm enough to go in the greenhouse & if we wait they
seem to be very slow producing a crop & we finish up with loads
of green totatoes. 😢
We live in Rotherham, S, Yorkshire in a one bedroom bungalow so
do'nt have a spare room & only the lounge window faces south &
other half not keen on seedlings in there. Any ideas please 😉

I start toms in my unheated GH around mid-April (icy weather-dependant) and sow several in case they don't all germinate, and find multi-purpose compost warmer than soil-based. I give the pots a good spraying with water then put them on a lightly-shaded shelf.

I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I start mine as seeds in a single 6" pot under clingfilm in the kitchen on Mar 27th.
When 1" high they go out into unheated conservatory and cold frame.
When two genuine leaves are present, potted singly into 3" pots in same conservatory.
They mature there until last frost has gone.

When potting tomatoes on you can plant hem deep, up to their first set of leaves, they then produce more roots from the buried stem, but I still wouldn't sow  them too early, April as said will be fine

Mine go into multi cell tray in heated propagator begining of March. once germinated they go into unheated propagator on north facing bedroom window cill.  At 1st true leaves they are potted up into 3" pots. By beginning of April they go into final buckets in unheated greenhouse although the roof has a layer of bubblewrap.  They then go into final positions.
