Frost forecast
« on: April 16, 2024, 09:33 »
Does anyone know of a reliable source of information as to whether there will be a frost? My first earlies are just poking through and it looks as if it will be cold tonight. I can fleece them but it is quite a lot of work so it would be good to have an accurate forecast.

Errrm nope!

Been caught out few times over the decades.

Personally if there is a risk I would cover anyway, at least you will have a crop.

We have several sites ranging 2c to 5c tomorrow night, will be covering the toms just in case, no point risking.
Good luck

Try the BBC or Met Office weather apps.  They give their prediction for your location.   I find the Met Office one more accurate.

Try 'weather & radar' app at weatherandradar.co.uk I use it daily and it's spot on!

I use quite a few apps/websites and also record them temperature at the allotment and compare. It's in a frost pocket so I tend to take the bbc forecast and subtract 2c from the minimum as a worst case scenario.

Accuweather and Yr are the best two apps I've found for weather so far, Yr is the Norwegian met office app and its good for scottish weather

So you have tomatoes in the ground now? Presumably under glass? Are you able to successfully get them through frosts usually then to produce well? I'm in North Yorkshire and all mine are in modules and only go out in the coldframe once the sun is on it, then they come back in for the night. I hadn't considered ever trying to get them out until the risk of frost is gone and ideally the nights are much warmer.
