Maran Chicken Sexing

Hi

Got my first chickens about 3 weeks ago from Selby market settled on a Hen with 8 chicks. They were sold as Marans, down to 7 chicks but getting large now. They seem to be 3 light and four dark pattern. Can they be sexed by the feather shade. If not can I sex any other way. Mother hen now laying brown but not dark brown so think they may not be pure.

Thank you for that infomation I have 3 light a 4 dark so fingers crossed. I have at least one trying to crow in the morning so have to sort things out soon. First time I have had hens since I was about 10 in those days they acted as pocket money. I had forgot the joys of owning hens.
