I had thought of string dangling from the hoop structure but now thinking canes.

Anyone got any thoughts on good supports?

i use string (nylon) in my poly tunnel. i ran a wire at ground level from one end to the other about a foot away from the polythene. then used screw in loop (closed up hooks), i have 3 wooden ridges in my tunnel so nice and easy to screw into.

last year i tied the tomato's to the string but this year i will be twisting to hopefully support more of the stems. last year the weight of the plant and crop tried pulling the plants down and made them kink / bend out at the bottom half.

I do mine this way too wires across length of pt fastened to wood with string hanging down wrapped around tom stalks works fine

String is the way to for me too. I just know what would happen if I took canes into my poly tunnel so I'm not tempting fate!! For my outside toms - its canes with used plastic bottles on top.

Nylon string for me too, attached to wires running the length of the greenhouse (no chance of growing them outdoors here) and then pegged into the pots containing the tomatoes.  I twist the stems of the toms around the string as they grow - it has proved the best method for me.

The best thing about the string and wires is they don't have to be removed at the end of the season - just tied up and left for the next time.

I use home-grown bamboo canes in my GH, bottom ends in the soil, top ends tied to a wire running along the top - the wire is positioned in such a way that the toms are angled away from the sides slightly, so the leaves are less likely to get scorched or press against the glass and trap condensation for long periods of time. It's easy, secure, and works well, although cordons do need a bit of tying in to stop them sliding down in an undignified corkscrew when they get tall and heavy!

Greenhouse toms here are supported by string attached to a wire at roof level, and going down the base of the plant, where I tie it loosely.

The I wind the tom after each branch forms, and especially where the truss becomes heavy!

Outside toms get similar treatment, but with a wire nailed to the wall.

It's safer on the eyes I find..;0)

I do mine with String in the green house, tied to a bamboo cane going across, I've never had any bother with them. Out side ones tied to long canes.

What about the next 4ft?

Bailing twine for me, tied to the bottom of the plants, then wrapped around. Saves tying them in all the time.

Canes then tie to it with 2cm sections of old tights or stockings.
The best free tom ties you can get!

I use nylon string but instead of tying it round the plant, I tie one end to a short piece of cane and bury it under the plant when putting them in the ground. Have to use nylon otherwise it would rot. At the end of the year, you can find the bit of cane when you dig up the tomato plants.

If you're using growbags, tie the string around the growbag.

Almost exactly the same method as me except instead of canes buried under the plants, I use tent pegs - which I can use from one year to the next.
