Metal coop?
« on: April 23, 2011, 11:17 »
Metal coop good or bad idea?
I now have a lovely little wooden coop with plans to build a bigger coop as i put in my last post. I have been thinking about the red mite problem and had a thought! A metal coop would get rid of the red mite problem (as long as no wood was used in the coop) what do you guys think?
Many thanks

I'm no expert but I would imagine a metal coop would be very cold in winter and possibly very warm in summer

Unless it had some kind of insulation, I would have thought it would either freeze them or cook them. Think what your car is like when you first get in it during the height of the summer or winter.

lots of condensation forming in the winter.

consider using plywood as the inner walls of a wooden coop. seal the internal edges, not many places for mites to hide, i then clad the plywood in shiplap to give a traditional coop effect,
used half inch ply, so it is nice and thick, warn in the winter, but absorbant as well to a certain degree

I agree metal isn't ideal, however one of the reasons a car gets hot is because of the windows (think greenhouse) and also the lack of through ventilation. One of my Belgians has taken up residence in my tin shed store with a bunch of eggs and I too was worried about her over heating but surprisingly it isn't too hot in their in fact no hotter than inside the broody ark. That said I wouldn't like a chicken in one over winter  :(.
Staffies are softer than you think.
