Incubator Disinfectant
« on: January 12, 2011, 21:50 »
Hello,
I got an egg incubator for Christmas ( :D ) and I am going to hopefully hatch some eggs next week.  But before I use it, I know that it needs to be cleaned.  But what do I use?  And where would I find it? Thanks for anything!  :)

I know some people who just use dettol based products and one lady told me she uses washing up liquid!

But I use V18, which you can buy online, or I used to get it from our 'sort of' local pet stores tht also caters for horses.  It's not cheap clucky, but is very good for disinfecting an cleaning all your chicken equipment too, and they say you can put a little in the hens water, but I never have.

I wouldn't use a caustic disinfectant like detol.  The best stuff is the baby bottle sterilising solution/ powder / tablets or the sanitizer you use to sterilise home brewing equipment.  You can get either from Boots or any large chemist.

Detergent is also quite effective as a disinfectant too which will kill bacteria.  A weak solution of bleach or chlorine (as used in swimming pools) will also do but make sure all residues are rinsed off.

Incidentally Grannie I've used Vanodine V18 in chickens & turkeys water to stop the spread of infections which often are spread via the common drinking facilities.  I wouldn't use it for an incubator as it is based on iodine which stains yellow. Otherwise it will be fine.

Actually I'd forgotten about the baby sterilising stuff!  Even better.  I have used that too!

okay then as the baby cleaner stuff seems most popular, I may use that, and maybe try other things in future.  Thank you soo much!  :D
