Our Sussex still fed up
« on: January 12, 2011, 12:00 »
Our White Sussex who has been moulting over the past weeks, stopped laying etc with pink comb and wattle is still looking really depressed (If a chicken can look depressed) she spends most of her time alone and without the company of the other four.  I am really worried about her - still no signs of pecking from the others - do they get down - so to speak and lose their rank in the group. Any ideas please

there could be more to it than just moulting.  Have you tried tempting her with any treats to see if she reacts?

Yes she is eating ok have been giving her poultry spice in her food and a small amount of tuna (spring water type) which she loves we have checked her for pests etc but seems ok and no signs of pecking from the others - do they lose their rank within group she used to be top chook

A heavy moult does slow them down for a while, i expect the light sussex will be top hen when she is back to normal as my 3 year old LS did the same a month ago but is now laying again.
A few live mealworm can perk them up no end !  :)

Moulting can be very debilitating I wouldn't worry.  She'll probably be back to her normal self soon.
