I've tried that many times this year to get my peas to grow without much success. Last year , no problem , i grew early onward last year and had an abundant crop grown in a bed that was horse manured the previous year for another crop. This year tried Onward maincrop all chitted at first and they start off ok but as soon as i plant them they or most die on me. Dug in horse manure last autumn to over winter. the brassicas in the same bed are just coming on great. Do you think the soil is too rich for peas ? Why are some doing ok and most not? I wait in anticipation for any ideas.

do they start to grow and then keel over? or do they just refuse to show? If the latter, then they may be being eaten by slugs below the surface, or mice/pidgeons digging them up. I understand that peas don't need a very rich soil, but DD is the expert here

They start to grow as if they will be ok and then just turn brown and wither , i've checked under ground and can't see  anything untoward

It may be too rich for them. Peas like plenty of humus & not too much nitrogen. (They fix it, not need it).

They also don't like acid soil and a bit of lime doesn't come amiss if it is.

Bearing in mind that my peas are growing in a poor dry sandy soil with a bit of compost I happen to have thrown in, I think DD  could be right - maybe you are killing them with kindness? My peas are doing great, but my SWEET peas - that is another story!!!
