Disappointed with onion sets...
« on: May 25, 2010, 12:51 »
I ordered from T&M, red, white & brown onion sets. Paid £3.89 for the bag. When they arrived they looked dry and wizened, some had started to sprout  Should I complain?

I've only planted the red ones because I didn't think the others would grow. But even the reds haven't put on any weight and they've been planted a few weeks now. Do you think I should leave them or pull 'em up and plant something else?

the sets give nutrients to the shoot and stalks and you will get a new bulb. "The original set is not a start of the bulb at all". Please be patient and hope you get good harvest. And on the other sets you mentioned not looking good
are they rotten (press slightly the set and are they squiggy)?
if not bung them in and you will be surprised to see them grow good.
In my very short experience and testing drier sets are better to start with than the wet fleshy sets.
All the best  :)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

I realised that I didn't end up with as many onion seedlings as hoped so I popped down to Wilko's and got a bag. Forget the price but they were cheap. They are now sprouting nicely with only about two rejects. I don't buy anything from where you got yours.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
