greenhouse dismantle?? sizes??
« on: April 05, 2011, 19:28 »
hi all,

ive been lucky enough to have been given a 8x6 aluminium greenhouse which is only a couple of years old...  i have to dismantle and transport it home and i,m not sure what sizes the frame may break down to??

i have a volvo estate so i,m hoping it will all fit in for 1 trip..

so does anyone know what the maximum length piece of frame maybe please?

and would you think it will fit into my vehicle? 1 trip?

many thanks

the 8ft ridge, eaves and base pieces will be longest.  Although it's an 8ft greenhouse the pieces will be maybe 8ft6in long.

The glass will be very heavy though, but will go in the car..........my son moved my 8 x 6 in one go :)

having moved an 8x6, a 12x 8 and a 6x6 I can say that the 8x6 is easily moved in a car but if you can get a roof rack you can move the door, 2 ends, 2 sides and one half of the roof in pieces, with the other half of the roof (ie 3 struts) and the glass in the car

I can't be certain, but I think when I got mine from an old Payless (years ago), I was advised to stand the glass on edge in the car. I think it's because it can withstand the bumps better than if it's laid flat. Obviously, you have to tie it back to somethiong to secure it!

But please don't arrive on my doorstep with a hammer, if the lot slides forward, and breaks into bits...

It is easier to get glass out of the car if it's on edge too.

Good luck anyway, you should be well away by Easter!

We dismantled & moved an 8 x 6 (Halls) greenhouse last weekend, as follows:

1.  lift off the door, complete with plastic (not glass) panels
2.  unclip & remove all the glass
3.  unbolt & remove 6 no. roof struts (3 each side, one bolt top & bottom of each) and the  bottom stay for the roof vent, which then slides out of the ridge bar.
4.  unbolt & remove the ridge bar (2 bolts either end)
5.  unbolt each corner to separate the sides, front, & rear (5 bolts each corner - three at top, two at bottom)

The glass & all the smaller bits went in the back of the car, & the four larger frame sections on the roof rack of my mate's van - though would just as easily go on the roofrack of a larger car such as a Volvo estate. The heaviest bit by far is the glass.

Simples  :D
